The 2011 Grimoldby Cup provided an incredible opportunity for young football talent to shine.
From 7-9 October the 4th annual U-17 Grimoldby Cup, organised by Ambassadors inSport in partnership with SAFA Tshwane, took place under stunning Mamelodi sunshine.
Over 200 players from 11 teams participated. Eight of the teams represented Local Football Associations from across Tshwane, with the remaining teams travelling from Johannesburg, Durban and Zambia. Tournament coordinator, Tim Tucker, said, “The event has been a huge success with all the games played in a wonderful spirit. We are particularly thankful to Big Save and all our other partners for their support.”
The tournament provided a number of companies an opportunity to support grass roots football development. The following were the event sponsors: Big Save, Basil Read, ICC, Colgate, Unilever, Premier, Brenner, Below Zero, Best Clothing, Tiger-Tastic, Ruto Supreme, Sasko-Spekko and Gr8 Gifts. As a result of this sponsorship every team received a brand new football kit, transport to the event, lunch every day, and a goody bag for every player.
Sunday afternoon’s final was a wonderful contest between reigning champions, Real Mamelodians, and Winterveldt FC. In front of more than 500 spectators, the close contest was eventually won by Winterveldt 2-0. The winners received a cheque for R6000, the runners up R2000, and prizes of R1000 were awarded to the 3rd placed team, the plate winners and the fair play winners.
Local coach, Joshua Malwa from Mamelodi said, “this tournament improves every year and adds tremendous value to grass roots football development. We appreciate the contribution that Ambassadors and Big Save continue to make through organising this event.”
A ladies match was featured as the curtain raiser to the final with Ambassadors in Sport promising to introduce a four team ladies tournament in 2012.
